PosiTector ® 6000 FNDS Coating Thickness Probe Q & A

Q. – What has changed?
A. – We have added the PosiTector 6000 FNDS probe to our family of coating thickness probes. The PosiTector 6000 FNDS probe simultaneously measures and displays the individual layer thicknesses of zinc and paint in a duplex coating system, making it a faster and more affordable measurement of both thicknesses in a duplex system. The PosiTector 6000 FNDS probe can also be taken out of ‘Duplex Mode’ from the gage menu, allowing it to operate identically to a PosiTector 6000 FNS probe.

Q. – What is a duplex coating system?
A. – Duplex coating systems use a combination of two corrosion protection systems – typically paint or powder coating over galvanized steel (hot‐dip, electro or zinc spray metallizing). The resultant corrosion protection is superior to either protection system used independently. Duplex coatings systems are widely used for bridges, radio towers, pipes, sports complexes and many other environmentally exposed structures. Q. – How does the PosiTector 6000 FNDS measure duplex coatings? A. – The Gage utilizes both magnetic (ferrous) and eddy current (non‐ferrous) principles simultaneously to calculate and display the individual paint and zinc layer thicknesses.  The magnetic principle is used to measure the combined paint/zinc thickness over the ferrous substrate, and the eddy current principle is used to measure the paint thickness over the non‐ferrous zinc coating.  The zinc thickness is calculated by subtracting the paint thickness measurement from the combined paint/zinc thickness measurement.

Q. – Can I purchase a new PosiTector 6000 FNDS probe for an existing PosiTector gage body?
A. – Yes. PosiTector 6000 FNDS probes are compatible with all PosiTector Advanced and Standard models with a color display. Your customers can simply update the base package in their existing PosiTector by following step‐by‐step instructions at www.defelsko.com/update .

Q. – What are some typical applications?
A. – The PosiTector 6000 FNDS probe was designed to measure individual layer thicknesses of zinc and paint/powder in a duplex coating system with a minimum zinc layer thickness of 13µm (0.5 mil). The Zinc layer can be applied using several methods:  Hot‐dip galvanizing (most common for duplex coatings)  Electro‐galvanizing  Zinc spray metallizing (thermal spray zinc) The PosiTector 6000 FNDS can also be taken out of ‘Duplex Mode’, allowing it to act as a PosiTector 6000 FNS probe to measure:  Non‐magnetic coatings on ferrous metals (steel)  Non‐conductive coatings on non‐ferrous metals

Q. – Is the new PosiTector 6000 FNDS compatible with PosiSoft solutions?
A. – Yes.  All our software solutions have been updated to support the new PosiTector 6000 FNDS probe.  A simple update to software is all that is required.

Probe Q & A

Q. – How are PosiTector 6000 probes calibrated at DeFelsko?
A. – The PosiTector 6000 is calibrated against known traceable standards traceable to a National Metrology Lab. A long form Certificate of Calibration containing actual thickness measurements is included with every probe.

Q. – How long is the warranty on the PosiTector 6000 FNDS probe?
A. – DeFelsko Corporation’s standard 2 year warranty applies.
